The Sicilian Clan
Short description
The Sicilian Clan centres on Vittorio Manalese, a Sicilian who has settled in Paris and runs a business selling electric games while keeping his family unaware of his criminal activities. When the imprisoned killer Roger Sartet is freed with the clan's help, he brings them a plan he devised behind bars: seizing a collection of jewels assembled in Rome for an international exhibition. A friend in America, Tony Nicosia, suggests taking the stones while they are being flown from New York, and the operation becomes a family undertaking. Pursuing Sartet is Commissaire Le Goff, whose investigation gradually draws him toward the gang.
Henri Verneuil directed and produced the film and co-wrote it with José Giovanni and Pierre Pelegri. It followed several of his earlier features, among them The Cow and I, Any Number Can Win and Weekend at Dunkirk, and preceded later ones such as The Burglars and The Night Caller. Jean Gabin plays Vittorio, Alain Delon plays Sartet and Lino Ventura plays Le Goff, with Irina Demick, Amedeo Nazzari and Yves Lefebvre among the cast; fifty actors and forty crew members are credited. Produced in Italy and France, the film runs 121 minutes and had a budget of 19 million dollars. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from 8,933 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.6 from 386 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the novel by Auguste Lebretton.
- The novel's events take place around fifty years ago. Since Alain Delon, who is 33 years old, plays his role in the film, the screenwriters had to slightly 'adjust' the character's biography, in particular, Monique, Sartre's daughter in the novel, became his sister in the film.
- The way Sartre escapes from the prison van, despite its 'cinematic' quality and improbability, is not the author's invention. That is exactly how the notorious gangster René Girier, nicknamed 'The Cane,' escaped at the end of the 1940s. However, unlike Sartre, Girier simply pried a plank out of the van's floor.
