Unknown Brood is a documentary that explores the volatile life of rock musician Herman Brood. The film examines the contrast between Brood's public image as a hedonistic figure and his private nature as a vulnerable and shy individual. It also addresses his preoccupation with death, a recurring theme in his music that preceded his death by suicide. To paint this portrait, the film uses interviews with his family, former partners, professional associates, and photographer Anton Corbijn, alongside archival footage and private videos recorded by the musician himself.
The film was directed by Dennis Alink, who also served as a producer and co-writer. It was the first of three films directed by Alink, followed by Out and The Bi Issue. The production was a collaboration between companies from Germany, the Netherlands, and the Netherlands Antilles. With a runtime of 85 minutes, the documentary has received a generally positive response from its audience, holding a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDb based on 114 votes.
