Maximo has spent years charming wealthy older women, and his marriage to a wife twice his age has funded a comfortable life. After twenty-five years, she leaves him for a younger man, and he loses the mansion along with the marriage. With nowhere else to go, he moves into the small apartment of his estranged sister Sara and her ten-year-old son Hugo, whose world is far removed from his own.
Directed by Ken Marino, the film was his first time behind the camera, followed the next year by Dog Days. Eugenio Derbez, who also produced, plays Maximo, with Salma Hayek Pinault as Sara, Raphael Alejandro as Hugo, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Mckenna Grace among a credited cast of thirty. Jon Zack and Chris Spain wrote the screenplay, and the production was a Mexican and American co-production released in March 2017.
The comedy earned about 26 million dollars worldwide against its modest scale, a solid result for the genre. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 667 votes, suggesting those who sought it out were more satisfied than the broader voting pool. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from thirty reviews places professional response below both audience scores.
