Nosferatu
Short description
Set in 1838, Nosferatu follows Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent sent to a remote region of Bohemia to complete a property sale with the eccentric Count Orlok. He leaves behind his young wife, Ellen, who has been troubled since childhood by disturbing visions. Thomas soon becomes a prisoner of the count, a being who turns out to be undead and feeds on blood, while Ellen's condition comes to resemble an obsession or possession. When Orlok travels to the town of Wisborg in connection with his newly purchased home, horror spreads through the community.
Robert Eggers wrote and directed the film, his fourth feature after The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman. Lily-Rose Depp plays Ellen, Nicholas Hoult plays Thomas, and Bill Skarsgård plays Count Orlok. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Emma Corrin appear in supporting roles. Producers include Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus and Eggers, and the film is a co-production of the United Kingdom, the United States and the Czech Republic.
The film was released worldwide on 25 December 2024 and runs 133 minutes. Made for about 50 million dollars, it took roughly 182 million dollars at the global box office, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 262,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 out of 10 from nearly 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 381 reviews places professional assessment above the audience scores on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- Corvin Castle in Transylvania, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, was used as the setting for Count Orlok's castle. Vlad the Impaler was held prisoner there for some time.
- Bill Skarsgård specifically worked with a linguist to lower his voice by an octave.
- Night scenes were filmed during the day, and then red and yellow colors were removed from the image.
- Bill Skarsgård was initially cast as Thomas Hatter.
- Preparing for the filming of difficult scenes in which her character is tormented by Count Orlok, Lily-Rose Depp, on the advice of Robert Eggers, began practicing special dances, such as butoh.
- Bill Skarsgård was initially worried about how his character would look in makeup with numerous special prosthetics, and whether he would be able to act properly in this guise.
- According to makeup artist David White, Bill Skarsgård played Count Orlok with nine special prosthetics on his head and face alone. - Harry Styles and Anya Taylor-Joy were initially planned for the lead roles, but Styles declined due to commitments to other projects. Then, delays occurred with filming, and Taylor-Joy also left, as she was filming 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' at the time.
- Director and screenwriter Robert Eggers said that the image of Count Orlok was deliberately made to look “more like a vampire than they show in movies” and more in line with old images and legends. To achieve this, the culture of Orlok's homeland was specifically studied, where a mustache was an essential attribute of a man.
