Short description
Rachel Cameron is a 35-year-old schoolteacher living in a small Connecticut town, still sharing a home with her overbearing mother and with no partner of her own. When a man who grew up in the area returns and takes an interest in her, she starts to reconsider the shape of her life and what she wants from it.
The 1968 drama was directed by Paul Newman, the first of the two features he directed, and produced by Newman from a screenplay by Stewart Stern. Joanne Woodward stars as Rachel, with James Olson as Nick Kazlik, Kate Harrington as Mrs. Cameron, Estelle Parsons as Calla Mackie, Donald Moffat as Niall Cameron and Terry Kiser as a preacher. It runs 101 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly 4,500 votes, and it scores 6.6 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 74 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 12 reviews places it in line with the broader audience response. It took in about 3 million dollars worldwide.

Her face is not visible on screen because she was constantly crying. She naturally couldn’t swim yet, and the waves crashing on the shore frightened her.
