Anne Gauthier and Jean-Louis Duroc meet by chance one winter weekend while visiting their children at a boarding school. Both are widowed and raising a child alone: Anne works in film, and Jean-Louis is a racing driver. When Anne misses her train, Jean-Louis drives her back to Paris, and the hours on the road draw them closer. Each is still marked by the death of a spouse, and those memories complicate the tentative relationship that begins to form between them.
The film is a French drama and romance directed by Claude Lelouch, who wrote the screenplay with Pierre Uytterhoeven and produced it through Les Films 13. It was the first feature he directed, ahead of Love Is a Funny Thing, Money Money Money, Happy New Year, Bolero, and the later Les Miserables. Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant play Anne and Jean-Louis, with Pierre Barouh, Valérie Lagrange, Antoine Sire and Souad Amidou in supporting roles.
Released in May 1966 and running 102 minutes, the film holds a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 13,000 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from roughly 316 votes, indicating a strong and fairly consistent response from viewers. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 20 reviews sits somewhat below those audience scores.
