The Newton Boys

The Newton Boys follows four brothers from rural Texas in the 1920s who abandon farm work for a life of crime. Led by the eldest, Willis, the siblings and a friend begin robbing banks, and over roughly five years their spree extends across the United States and into Canada, totaling around eighty holdups. Their methods are careful and their jobs are planned to avoid bloodshed. Encouraged by their success, they set their sights on a larger target: a train carrying a substantial sum of federal money, an undertaking that draws attention from the authorities.

Richard Linklater directed and co-wrote the film, the fifth of the twenty-two features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between SubUrbia and Waking Life. Matthew McConaughey plays Willis, with Skeet Ulrich, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D'Onofrio as his brothers, and Dwight Yoakam as their associate Brentwood Glasscock. Anne Walker-McBay produced.

Released in March 1998, the film runs 122 minutes. It cost about 27 million dollars and took in roughly 10 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 13,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.1 from about 207 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 39 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
