Outcast

Mary and her teenage son Fergal have settled into a new home in a run-down part of Edinburgh, but they are not there by choice. The two are on the run from Cathal, a dangerous man who is hunting them, and they keep to themselves, avoiding friendships and anything that might draw attention. Fergal's growing attachment to Ally, a young woman living nearby, pulls against the strict rules his protective mother has built around their lives. Cathal pursues them using dark magic, and Mary's only means of defence is an older form of magic of her own, set against his. When local people begin to turn up brutally killed by some unknown force, fear spreads through the area, and it is unclear whether Cathal is behind the deaths or whether something else is loose that he is trying to destroy.

Outcast is a British and Irish fantasy horror directed by Colm McCarthy, who wrote the screenplay with Tom K. McCarthy. It was released in 2010 and runs 98 minutes. James Nesbitt plays Cathal, with Kate Dickie as Mary, Niall Bruton as Fergal, Karen Gillan as Ally, Therese Bradley as Jitta and Ciarán McMenamin as Liam. It was produced by Eddie Dick, Brendan McCarthy and John McDonnell.

The film was Colm McCarthy's first feature as director, ahead of The Girl with All the Gifts and Bagman. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from around 2,900 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5 from 53 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 11 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broad agreement rather than a sharp divide.
