Setsuko Kawashima is a chain-smoking office worker in Tokyo, lonely and dissatisfied with the life she has settled into. When her niece Mika persuades her to enrol in an unconventional English class, Setsuko takes on an American persona named Lucy, complete with a blonde wig, and finds the new identity liberating. She develops feelings for her teacher, John, but when he and Mika both disappear, Setsuko sets off with her sister from Tokyo to southern California to find them.
The film is directed by Atsuko Hirayanagi, who wrote the screenplay with Boris Frumin. Hirayanagi also produced alongside Yukie Kito and Jessica Elbaum. It comes from Gloria Sanchez Productions, NHK, Matchgirl Pictures and Meridian Content, and is a co-production between the United States and Japan. Shinobu Terajima leads the cast as Setsuko, with Josh Hartnett as John. The story is based on Hirayanagi's earlier short film of the same name. It runs 95 minutes and blends comedy, drama and romance.
The film was released in January 2018 and drew a modest audience, with around 3,500 votes on IMDb giving it a 6.8 rating and about 100 votes on TMDB giving it 6.7. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 53 reviews is slightly higher than those viewer scores, suggesting reviewers responded a little more warmly than general audiences did.
