Spoor follows Janina Duszejko, a retired engineer and part-time English teacher living in a small village in the Kłodzko Valley, near the Czech border in southern Poland. A vegetarian and devoted astrologer who reads William Blake and keeps company with nature, she clashes repeatedly with the local hunters over their treatment of animals. When a notorious poacher is found dead near her home, more bodies follow, all of them hunters. Janina is convinced she understands who, or what, is responsible, though the police and the church dismiss her. As suspicion turns toward her, she finds herself in danger.
Agnieszka Holland directed, working from a screenplay she wrote with Olga Tokarczuk, adapted from Tokarczuk's novel. It arrived in 2017, between In Darkness (2011) and Mr. Jones (2019), in the run of features Holland has directed that includes Europa Europa (1990), The Secret Garden (1993), Copying Beethoven (2006), Charlatan (2020) and Green Border (2023). Kasia Adamik is also credited as director. Agnieszka Mandat plays Janina, with Wiktor Zborowski, Jakub Gierszał, Patrycja Volny, Miroslav Krobot and Borys Szyc among the cast of 22. The production was an international one, involving Germany, Poland, Slovakia, France, the Czech Republic and Sweden.
The film runs 128 minutes and blends crime, drama, mystery and thriller elements. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from 188 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.8 out of 10 from 42 reviews, so reviewers responded more warmly than the general audience did.
