City of Lies

City of Lies follows Russell Poole, a Los Angeles police detective who worked for years on the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. The cases stayed open, and Poole fell out of favour with the department. Years later, a reporter named Jack Jackson, whose career and reputation are in trouble, looks into why the investigation went nowhere. The two men join forces and uncover a widening network of corruption and lies that reaches into the police itself. The film is based on Randall Sullivan's book LAbyrinth.

Brad Furman directed the film, his fourth feature after The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner and The Infiltrator. Christian Contreras wrote the screenplay, and Johnny Depp plays Poole opposite Forest Whitaker as Jackson. The supporting cast includes Toby Huss, Dayton Callie, Neil Brown Jr. and Shea Whigham.

Released in 2018, the film had a limited commercial impact, with a worldwide box office of about 3 million dollars. Audiences rate it moderately: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from around 700 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 47 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores. The film runs 112 minutes.
