Short description

Robot Monster is a 1953 American science fiction horror film about an alien robot, Ro-Man, who arrives on Earth to wipe out the remaining human survivors of a devastating attack. A small group, among them a scientist, his family and a young woman named Alice, has managed to stay alive and holds out at a protected house that shields them from the robot's scanners. Ro-Man is under orders from his superiors, but as he observes the survivors and grows attached to Alice, he is torn between his mission and his feelings, while the humans look for a way to resist an enemy whose weapons have so far failed against them.

The film was directed and produced by Phil Tucker from a screenplay by Wyott Ordung, and it runs just over an hour. It stars George Nader, Claudia Barrett, Gregory Moffett, John Mylong, Selena Royle and Pamela Paulson, and was made by Three Dimension Pictures. Contemporary viewers have been far from kind to it: on IMDb it holds a rating of 3 out of 10 from roughly 5,800 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 4.5 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of around 107 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 15 reviews places it only slightly above the wider audience score on IMDb. Against a modest production, the film took in about 1 million dollars worldwide.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to a well-known urban legend, the film's director was so upset by the criticism that he attempted suicide.
  • The film was shot in 4 days. The main filming took place in Bronson Canyon, with the exception of a few scenes shot at the director's house in Los Angeles.
  • Since the film's budget did not allow for the purchase of a robot costume for filming, the director asked his friend, who had a gorilla suit, to play the role of the robot-villain. A diving helmet with wire antennas attached completed the image of the menacing alien.
