Summer Stock

Jane Falbury runs a struggling New England farm, and her finances are stretched thin when her younger sister Abigail returns home with a troupe of actors in tow. Abigail has offered the barn as a rehearsal space, hoping to save money while the company prepares a show, and she expects a leading role in it. Jane is unhappy about the arrangement, but agrees to let the group stay on the condition that they earn their keep by helping with the farm work. The director, Joe D. Ross, becomes the focus of Jane's changing feelings toward her unexpected guests.

Charles Walters directed the film, which followed his earlier Ziegfeld Follies and Easter Parade and came before Lili and High Society. Judy Garland plays Jane, and Gene Kelly plays Joe, with Eddie Bracken, Gloria DeHaven, Marjorie Main and Phil Silvers among the credited cast. George Wells and Sy Gomberg wrote the screenplay, and Joe Pasternak produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Summer Stock was released in 1950 and runs 108 minutes. Its reported budget of about 2 million dollars was matched by a worldwide box office of roughly 3 million dollars, a modest return by the standards of a major studio musical. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from around 5,200 votes, while on TMDB it rates 6.7 from a much smaller number of votes.
