Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese action drama set in a Tokyo where ghouls live secretly among humans, surviving on human flesh. Ken Kaneki, a quiet university student, is attacked by one of them and barely survives. After emergency surgery he receives organs from his attacker and wakes to find he has been changed into a half-ghoul. Ordinary food becomes inedible to him, and he is caught between the human life he knew and a new hunger he cannot control. Hunted by those who pursue ghouls, he has to work out how to live with what he has become.

The film is directed by Kentaro Hagiwara, his first feature, released in 2017 and the earliest of the five titles listed for him, followed later by Blue Period, Arrogance and Virtue, Wind Breaker and HENSHIN THE FIRST. Ichiro Kusuno wrote the screenplay, Tomohiro Nagae produced, and Masataka Kubota plays Ken Kaneki, with Yoshiko Sengen, Nobuyuki Suzuki, Yo Oizumi, Yu Aoi and Hiyori Sakurada among the cast. It earned about 5 million US dollars worldwide, a modest return for a theatrical release. On IMDb the film sits at 5.7/10 from roughly 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7/10 from around 389 votes, a gap of a full point between the two audiences. A critics' score of 6.4/10 from 17 reviews places it closer to the IMDb figure than to the TMDB one.
