Love Affair

Aboard an ocean liner sailing to New York, French painter Michel Marnet and American singer Terry McKay meet and fall for each other. Both are already attached to other people: Michel is engaged to Lois Clarke, a wealthy industrialist's heir, and Terry is involved with her producer, Kenneth Bradley. Despite their commitments, the two begin a romance during the crossing and make a promise to meet again in six months, each having ended their existing relationship and found work, to see whether their feelings have lasted. What happens when the appointed day arrives tests that promise.

Leo McCarey directed and produced the film, which he worked on between The Awful Truth (1937) and Good Sam (1948); he later directed An Affair to Remember (1957). The screenplay was written by Delmer Daves and Donald Ogden Stewart. Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer lead the cast as Terry and Michel, with Maria Ouspenskaya as Michel's grandmother, Lee Bowman as Kenneth, Astrid Allwyn as Lois and Maurice Moscovitch as Maurice Cobert. Thirty-one performers are credited.

Released by RKO Radio Pictures in April 1939 and running 88 minutes, the film drew a critics' rating of 8.4 out of 10 from 12 reviews, while audiences rate it 7.3 on IMDb from around 7,200 votes and 7 on TMDB from about 132 votes.
