Set in Nome, Alaska, around 1900, the film follows Roy Glennister, a ship captain and mine owner who finds his claim under threat from powerful interests. Alexander McNamara, the local gold commissioner, and a corrupt judge conspire against him, using the law itself as a weapon. Glennister puts his trust in the newly arrived officials to settle the dispute fairly, while his partner Al Dextry prefers to defend their ground with a rifle. Cherry Malotte, the influential owner of the town saloon and Glennister's love interest, becomes drawn into the conflict on his side, and the pair are pushed toward taking matters into their own hands. The story is based on Rex Beach's novel about the Alaska gold rush.

Ray Enright directed this 1942 western drama, the first entry in the chronological list of his films that also includes Gung Ho! (1943), Kansas Raiders (1950) and Flaming Feather (1952). Lawrence Hazard and Tom Reed wrote the screenplay, and Frank Lloyd produced. John Wayne plays Glennister opposite Marlene Dietrich as Cherry, with Randolph Scott as McNamara, Margaret Lindsay as Helen Chester, Harry Carey as Dextry and Richard Barthelmess as Bronco Kid, among a credited cast of 51. It runs 87 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a 6.7 rating from roughly 3,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from a much smaller pool of around 68 voters.
