Short description

Cube Zero is set in a secret underground complex where staff monitor a vast structure of shifting, identical rooms known as the Cube. A young operator, Wynn, watches prisoners move through the maze, unaware that the people inside have been told a cover story about their situation. When he becomes fixated on a woman named Rains, who has no memory of who she is or how she got there, he begins to question the orders he has been given and the institution he works for. His doubts set him on a path that puts him in conflict with the system he has served.

The film is the directorial debut of Ernie Barbarash, who also wrote the screenplay, and it is the first of eighteen features he has directed. The cast includes Zachary Bennett as Wynn, David Huband as Dodd, Stephanie Moore as Rains, Martin Roach, Terri Hawkes and Richard McMillan. It was produced in Canada by Lionsgate, Mr. X and Mad Circus Films.

Released in 2004, the film has a rating of 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 44,000 votes and 5.7 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 1,200 votes. Those figures suggest a modest but steady level of interest, with the larger IMDb sample pointing to a mixed reaction from viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • An Atari 2600 game console controller is briefly shown in the room with monitors at the beginning of the film.
  • The film features a slightly modified Moviola film editing device (with a couple of speakers and an on/off button added).
  • The final scene, featuring the mentally impaired character of Zachary Bennett, is a direct reference to the original film 'Cube' (Vincenzo Natali, 1997).
