Clare Shannon, a shy seventeen-year-old struggling through high school with her friends Meredith and June, receives an old music box from her father. An inscription on it promises that its owner will have wishes granted, and when Clare tries it, the wish comes true. Before long she has money, popularity and the boy she wanted, but people close to her begin dying in gruesome ways, and she comes to believe she must get rid of the box before it costs her everything.
Wish Upon is a 2017 fantasy horror thriller directed by John R. Leonetti, the fifth of the seven features he has directed to date, following Annabelle and Wolves at the Door. Barbara Marshall wrote the screenplay, Sherryl Clark produced, and Joey King leads a cast that also includes Ki Hong Lee, Sydney Park, Shannon Purser, Sherilyn Fenn and Elisabeth Röhm.
Made for about 12 million dollars, the film took in roughly 14 million worldwide, a modest return on its budget. Reception was mixed at best: on IMDb it holds 5.1 out of 10 from about 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from around 1,500 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 4 out of 10 from 91 reviews, placing it below the audience scores.
