Ann Hamilton, the quiet daughter of a chemistry professor, marries Alan Garroway after a brief courtship, though she knows little about his family or background. Alan is a wealthy industrialist, and he sets about turning his wife into a polished society figure. Their life together is unsettled by his refusal to discuss Michael, the brother he says has been gone for years.

Vincente Minnelli directed Undercurrent, the third of the fourteen films he made, following Ziegfeld Follies and preceding The Pirate. Edward Chodorov wrote the screenplay, and Pandro S. Berman produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Katharine Hepburn plays Ann, Robert Taylor plays Alan, and Robert Mitchum plays Michael. Edmund Gwenn, Marjorie Main and Jayne Meadows appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of fifty-nine.

The film was released in November 1946 and runs 116 minutes. Made for about two million dollars, it returned roughly twice that amount worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.9 from 53 votes, a modest figure for a production with this cast and studio backing, and one that suggests audiences have found it less enduring than other Minnelli films from the same period.
