The Beach Bum
Short description
The Beach Bum follows Moondog, a poet living a carefree life of drugs, drink and women in the Florida Keys, where his wealthy wife Minnie indulges his ways. When a fatal accident takes her life, her will ties his share of her estate to one condition: he must finally finish the book of poems he has put off for years. That sends him wandering in search of inspiration, meeting a string of eccentrics along the way. Matthew McConaughey plays Moondog, with Isla Fisher as Minnie, Snoop Dogg as Lingerie, Zac Efron as Flicker, Martin Lawrence as Captain Wack, and Jimmy Buffett as himself.
Harmony Korine wrote and directed the film, which sits between Spring Breakers (2013) and Aggro Dr1ft (2024) among the six features he has directed. Steve Golin, Charles-Marie Anthonioz and John Lesher produced, with 41 credited cast members and 90 credited crew. The production spanned the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Switzerland at a budget of 5 million USD.
Released on 21 March 2019 and running 95 minutes, the film mixes comedy and drama and earned roughly its budget back worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 582 votes, indicating a modest reception from viewers.
