Veronica is a Spanish horror film set in Madrid in 1991. A teenage girl named Verónica looks after her younger brother and sisters at home. During a total solar eclipse, she and two classmates use a Ouija board to contact her deceased father. The session goes wrong: the board breaks, Verónica falls into a trance and loses consciousness. Afterwards she returns to her family apartment, where she begins to notice disturbing occurrences around her and comes to believe something from the other side has followed her home. The screenplay, written by Paco Plaza and Fernando Navarro, draws on a police case in Spain that was never solved.
Paco Plaza directed the film, which came out in 2017 between [REC]³ Genesis and The Grandmother in his filmography. Sandra Escacena plays Verónica, with Bruna González, Claudia Placer and Iván Chavero as the siblings she cares for. Ana Torrent appears as Ana and Consuelo Trujillo as Sister Muerte; twenty-two cast members are credited in all. Enrique López Lavigne produced, and the production involved TVE, Apaches Entertainment, Orange and Sony Pictures International Productions.
The film runs 105 minutes. It drew a larger number of IMDb votes than TMDB votes, and both audiences place it at 6.2 out of 10, while the critics' rating stands at 7.2 out of 10 from 35 reviews, noticeably higher than the audience scores.
