Short description
Three adventurous friends from Paris, Manu, Roland, and Laetitia, seek a way to recover from professional failures and broken dreams. After learning about a sunken aircraft filled with riches off the coast of Congo, the group travels to Africa to retrieve the treasure. Their mission becomes dangerous as they face opposition from mercenaries and pirates who are pursuing the same prize.
Directed by Robert Enrico, this 1967 production was the first of three films he directed, preceding The Old Gun and The French Revolution. The screenplay was written by Enrico and José Giovanni. The film features a cast led by Alain Delon, Lino Ventura, and Joanna Shimkus, with supporting roles played by Serge Reggiani, Hans Meyer, and Jean Darie. A joint effort between France and Italy, the movie was produced by SNC, CGIC, and Compagnia Generale Finanziaria Cinematografica.
The film has a runtime of 112 minutes and blends elements of adventure, drama, and romance. It has been received positively by its viewers, maintaining a rating of 6.9/10 on TMDB based on 142 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Both episodes (the visit to the fort with Jean-Jean and the final fight) were filmed at Fort Boyard, which was in a state of extreme disrepair at the time (which is clearly visible in the film). Boyard occupies a total of 15 minutes of screen time. It took three weeks to film them, which were never fully completed, being interrupted by a severe storm. During which the film crew had to be urgently evacuated by helicopter.
- The film is based on the novel of the same name by José Giovanni. The author himself also filmed his own cinematic adaptation of the novel in the same year, released under the title "The Law of the Survivor".
- The characters Roland Darban and Manou Borelli were borrowed by the author, José Giovanni, from his first novel "The Hole" (1957–1958). In the film adaptation of this novel (directed by Jacques Becker, 1960), the role of Roland Darban was played by non-professional actor Jacques Kerrod, and the role of Manou Borelli was played by Philippe Leroi. The characters bear a very distant external resemblance to their prototypes and have a completely different fate.
