A Man Called Hero follows Hua, a young Chinese man who flees to America after violent events at home and finds work under harsh, exploitative conditions. He rebels against the men controlling the labourers, makes enemies, and eventually brings his wife, Jade, to New York, where they raise a family. Sixteen years later, his son, Sword, arrives in the city to search for the father he never knew. Through the stories others tell him, Sword pieces together his father's past, including a long-running conflict with a rival martial artist, Invincible, from his father's old school.
The film was directed by Andrew Lau Wai-Keung and written by Manfred Wong Man-Chun, who also produced with Raymond Chow Man-Wai and John Chu Ka-Yan. It was Lau's ninth feature as director, following The Storm Riders and preceding The Legend of Speed. Ekin Cheng plays Hero Hua, with Shu Qi, Kristy Yang, Nicholas Tse, Yuen Biao and Jerry Lamb among the cast. Produced in Hong Kong with several mainland Chinese partners, the film runs 116 minutes.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds a 5.7 rating from about 2,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 68 votes, a low turnout for a wide commercial release.
