The King of Fighters is an action, science fiction and thriller film based on the video game series of the same name. It follows the surviving heirs of three legendary fighting clans, who are pulled into other dimensions by a sinister force. In each world they must face that dimension's own defenders, while the power that brought them there works to break through and invade the real world. The warriors' only hope lies in setting aside their differences and combining their abilities against a common enemy.
Gordon Chan directed the film, which came out in 2009 and runs 93 minutes. It sits between A-1 Headline (2004) and The Four 3 (2014) in a directing career that also includes Fist of Legend and Thunderbolt. The screenplay is credited to Chris Chow, Matthew Ryan Fischer and Rita Augustine, with Tilo Seiffert, Bobby Sheng and Tim Kwok producing. Maggie Q plays Mai Shiranui, Sean Faris plays Kyo Kusanagi, Ray Park plays Rugal, Will Yun Lee plays Iori Yagami, Françoise Yip plays Chizuru Kagura and David Leitch plays Terry Bogard.
Made for about 12 million USD, the film received weak audience scores: on IMDb it holds 3.1 out of 10 from roughly 4,800 votes, and on TMDB it has 4.8 out of 10 from 168 votes.
