The Straw Hat Pirates set course for Omatsuri Island, a resort that advertises beauty salons, banquets and entertainment. Its ruler, Baron Omatsuri, allows visitors to stay only if they first pass a series of ordeals. Monkey D. Luffy accepts the challenge, and the crew takes on the trials together. The island's pleasant surface hides darker intentions, and the tests strain the bonds among the pirates, leaving Luffy to hold his friends together and confront the Baron's scheme.
The film is the sixth One Piece feature and was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who had previously made the Digimon films and Our War Game; it sits between that early work and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, the 2006 film that followed it in his filmography. Masahiro Ito wrote the screenplay. Mayumi Tanaka voices Luffy, with Kazuya Nakai, Akemi Okamura, Kappei Yamaguchi, Hiroaki Hirata and Ikue Otani returning as Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji and Chopper. Toei Animation produced the film with Shueisha, Fuji Television Network and Toei Company, and it runs 91 minutes.
Released in Japan in March 2005, the film took about 10 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure for a theatrical anime release of its time. Audiences rate it 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 4,000 votes and 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB from about 260 votes, a consistent reception across both.
