Short description
Simon Spier is a high school student with a close family and a dependable circle of friends, but he is keeping two things to himself: he is gay, and he is in the middle of a growing email correspondence with a classmate who writes under a false name. When those messages fall into the wrong hands, another student threatens to expose him. The premise follows Simon as he tries to protect himself, keep the anonymous writer from disappearing, and find out who he has been talking to.
Love, Simon was released in 2018, adapted from Becky Albertalli's novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by screenwriters Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Greg Berlanti directed it, his third feature after The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy and Life As We Know It, and he went on to direct Fly Me to the Moon. Nick Robinson leads as Simon, with Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel as his parents, and Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp and Logan Miller in supporting roles. Made for about 17 million dollars, it earned roughly 66 million worldwide, a strong return on its cost.
Its ratings hold up well: 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 134,000 votes and 8 out of 10 on TMDB, while a 7.5 out of 10 from 238 critics' reviews places it on similar footing with its audiences.
What's left behind the scenes
- Early in the film's production, Nick Robinson's younger brother came out.
- After participating in filming, actor Keinan Lonsdale came out.
- The film made such an impression on Kristen Bell, Neil Patrick Harris, Matt Bomer, Tyler Oakley, and the hosts of the online show “Superfruit” – Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi – that they bought out all the tickets for screenings in their hometowns out of their own pockets, making these screenings free so that as many viewers as possible could see the film. Director Greg Berlanti did the same.
- Director Greg Berlanti revealed that some scenes with the friends (Simon, Lea, Abby, and Nick) were filmed while the actors believed filming had stopped. In pursuit of authentic reactions, he would sometimes say “Cut!”, having previously warned the operator to continue shooting. Some of these scenes made it into the final version of the film.
- The film is an adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s debut novel “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” (2015), and its working title was the same as the book’s. However, it was later decided that the title was too long, and it was shortened.
