Short description

In the remote Alaskan town of Barrow, winter brings a month without sunrise. As the last light fades, a gang of vampires arrives, treating the long darkness as an opportunity to feed on the residents who stayed behind. The town's sheriff, Eben Oleson, and his wife Stella, also a law officer, try to keep a shrinking group of survivors alive until daylight returns.

The film was directed by David Slade, following his debut Hard Candy and preceding The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Bandersnatch and Dark Harvest. It is based on the comic by Steve Niles, who shares screenplay credit with Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson, and was produced by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, among others. Josh Hartnett and Melissa George play Eben and Stella; Danny Huston appears as Marlow, Ben Foster as The Stranger, with Mark Boone Junior and Mark Rendall in supporting roles.

Released in October 2007, the horror thriller had a budget of about 30 million US dollars and took roughly 76 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 from around 200,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from just over 3,000. A critics' score of 5.8 from 157 reviews places it close to the audience ratings, with neither suggesting more than moderate enthusiasm.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place from August 14 to October 23, 2006.
  • Josh Hartnett performed the stunts himself, without using stunt doubles.
  • Practically all the night scenes were shot during the day.
  • The vampires in the film speak a language specifically developed with the help of a linguistics professor from one of New Zealand's universities.
  • The film was shot in New Zealand. Almost half of the actors involved are New Zealanders or Australians.
  • In the original script, the Stranger and the grandmother were supposed to die. The episodes where Eben and Stella find the Stranger, and where Marlowe returns to him, were invented and added during filming. These episodes were squeezed into the shooting schedule, even though everyone understood that they were unlikely to make it into the final version of the film.
