Custody

Custody follows Miriam and Antoine Besson, whose marriage has ended. Miriam seeks sole custody of their eleven-year-old son, Julien, believing he needs protection from his father, while Antoine argues that he is being unfairly shut out. The judge rules for shared custody, and Julien begins alternating between his parents. He also has an older sister, Josephine, who is close to adulthood and given more say over where she lives. Caught between two people who no longer agree on anything, Julien tries to keep the peace and prevent the situation from getting worse.

The film is Xavier Legrand's first feature as director, arriving before his second, The Successor, and he also wrote the screenplay. Lea Drucker and Denis Menochet play the parents, with Thomas Gioria as Julien, Mathilde Auneveux as Josephine, and supporting turns from Mathieu Saikaly and Florence Janas. Alexandre Gavras produced the French drama, which runs 93 minutes and blends family drama with thriller elements.

Audiences received it warmly: on IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 across roughly 11,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 7.5 from around 743 ratings. Critics were even more favourable, giving it 7.9 out of 10 from about 120 reviews, a stronger mark than either audience score.
