La Brassiere is a 2001 Hong Kong comedy about a lingerie manufacturer that upends its own conventions by putting two men in charge of designing a new bra. Johnny and Wayne are hired to create the "ultimate bra" within three months, with Samantha leading the Hong Kong branch under pressure from the company's Japanese bosses. The two initially have little idea what women actually want from such a garment, and the assignment turns into a lesson in both design and understanding. The film blends comedy, drama and romance around the workplace and the relationships that develop there.
Directed by Patrick Leung Pak-Kin and Chan Hing-Kai, it was the first feature in the directing filmographies of both men, who went on to collaborate again on Mighty Baby the following year. The screenplay is by Amy Chin Siu-Wai and Chan Hing-Kai, who also produced with Charles Heung. Lau Ching-wan and Louis Koo star as Johnny and Wayne, with Carina Lau as Samantha, Gigi Leung Wing-Kei as Lena, Lee San-San as Candy and Chikako Aoyama as Nanako, among a credited cast of 39.
Made for a budget of 5 million US dollars, the film rates 6 out of 10 on IMDb from 631 votes and 5.6 out of 10 on TMDB from 20 votes, indicating a modest but real audience following rather than wide acclaim.
