Short description
Us is a horror thriller written and directed by Jordan Peele. Adelaide Wilson returns to the Northern California coastal area where she grew up, travelling with her husband Gabe and their two children for a summer break by the beach. A day at the shore with their friends the Tylers gives way to an evening at the family's holiday home, where four silent figures appear outside, standing hand in hand. The strangers look exactly like the Wilsons, and the family is soon fighting for its survival against these doubles.
The film was released in March 2019, following Peele's debut Get Out and preceding Nope, his third feature as director. Lupita Nyong'o plays Adelaide and her counterpart Red, with Winston Duke as Gabe, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex as the children, and Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker as the Tylers. Jordan Peele also produced alongside Sean McKittrick and Jason Blum, with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions among the companies behind it. Made for around 20 million dollars, it grossed roughly 256 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from some 389,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 from 8,300 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.9 from 553 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jason Blum was one of the producers of Jordan Peele's previous film. He was offered to become a producer on this film as well, but his company Blumhouse Productions was unable to provide the required budget, and Universal Pictures brought Blum on as a hired producer.
- Between takes, Lupita Nyong'o remained in character, which the other actors and the film crew found frightening.
- Filming took place from late July to early October 2018 in Santa Cruz and Los Angeles.
- To prepare for her role, Lupita Nyong'o worked with tutors and specialists – an otolaryngologist, a speech therapist, and others – due to fears of losing her voice.
- In Red's speech, as performed by Lupita Nyong'o, spasmodic dysphonia (a strained, intermittent, trembling voice) is audible, as Red has not spoken for many years.
