Short description
Sunday Bloody Sunday is a British drama about a love triangle in contemporary London. Alex Greville, a recently divorced career woman, and Dr. Daniel Hirsh, a middle-aged physician, are each separately involved with Bob Elkin, a younger artist. Both know Bob is seeing the other, and neither is prepared to give him up, even as the arrangement strains their otherwise settled lives. The film follows the three of them over a short period, ending with Bob's decision to leave for America.
John Schlesinger directed the film from an original screenplay by Penelope Gilliatt, with Joseph Janni producing. It was Schlesinger's fifth feature, arriving between Midnight Cowboy and The Day of the Locust. Peter Finch plays Daniel, Glenda Jackson plays Alex, and Murray Head plays Bob, with Peggy Ashcroft, Tony Britton and Maurice Denham among a credited cast of 68.
Made in the United Kingdom by Vic Films Productions and Vectia, the film runs 110 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from around 7,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from a much smaller base of 143 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 30 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores, indicating stronger admiration among reviewers than among general viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Ian Bannen was originally chosen for the role of Hirsch. However, he was so nervous about a kiss with another actor on screen potentially harming his career that he couldn't focus on his work, and was fired shortly after filming began. Later, Ian regretted not appearing in the film after all.
- This marked the first screen appearance of Daniel Day-Lewis, who was 14 years old at the time of filming. He played a young vandal who damaged expensive cars near a church. His fee was two pounds sterling.
- The film is based on the story of the relationship between director John Schlesinger (1926-2003) and actor John Stainer.
