Lizzie

Lizzie is a crime drama set in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892. Lizzie Borden, thirty-two and unmarried, lives under the strict control of her domineering father, Andrew, in a household she shares with her stepmother, Abby, and her sister, Emma. When the family hires Bridget Sullivan, a young Irish maid, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit, and the two women form a secret intimate bond. As tensions inside the Borden home mount, the relationship and the pressures of Lizzie's confined life build toward a violent breaking point. The story draws on the real case of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe and was never convicted.

Craig William Macneill directed the film, his second feature after The Boy, from a screenplay by Bryce Kass. Chloë Sevigny, who also produced, plays Lizzie, with Kristen Stewart as Bridget, Jamey Sheridan as Andrew, Fiona Shaw as Abby, Kim Dickens as Emma and Denis O'Hare as John Morse.

Released in September 2018, the film runs 106 minutes. It received a critics' rating of 5.9 on IMDb, where audience voters give it the same average of 5.9 from around 10,000 votes; on TMDB, users rate it 6.2 from roughly 305 votes. The three scores sit close together, indicating a generally mixed response rather than a sharp divide between critics and audiences.
