Short description
Captured by smugglers when he was just a hatchling, a macaw named Blu never learned to fly and lives a happily domesticated life in Minnesota with his human friend, Linda. Blu is thought to be the last of his kind, but when word comes that Jewel, a lone female, lives in Rio de Janeiro, Blu and Linda go to meet her. Animal smugglers kidnap Blu and Jewel, but the pair soon escape and begin a perilous adventure back to freedom -- and Linda.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Throughout the cartoon, birds – characters from the popular game "Angry Birds" – can occasionally be seen in the background. Interestingly, the game "Angry Birds Rio" is based on the plot of this cartoon.
  • In the Russian version of the cartoon, instead of Jamie Foxx's English song "Fly Love", the Portuguese song "Ararinha" performed by Carlinhos Brown is used. This song is not included on the official cartoon soundtrack.
  • In reality, blue-and-gold macaws do not have blue heads, but white ones. However, hyacinth macaws are completely blue.
  • Blu and Nigel each lack one claw on their feet, while Jewel has two missing – real domesticated cockatoos and macaws have four claws, and wild ones even five, while the aforementioned cartoon characters have only three claws per foot.
  • According to the plot, Nigel was a star in many television films until he was replaced by a green Amazon parrot, presented in the cartoon as a true angel, although in nature it is the opposite. Amazons are very aggressive and predatory towards other birds, while the gentle and tender cockatoo would be more suited to the role of an angel parrot.
  • In the cartoon, birds – characters from the popular game "Angry Birds" – can occasionally be seen in the background. Interestingly, the game "Angry Birds Rio" is based on the plot of this cartoon.
