Short description

Woody Woodpecker is an animated family comedy about a conflict between a hyperactive woodpecker and a city lawyer. When Lance Walters arrives in the forest with his partner and son to build a dream home, he discovers that his plans require cutting down the tree where Woody lives. The bird uses various tricks to stop the construction and terrorize the workers and the lawyer, although he forms a friendship with the lawyer's son.

Directed by Alex Zamm, this film followed seven previous projects in his career, including The Little Rascals Save the Day and Crown for Christmas. The screenplay was written by Zamm and William Robertson, with Mike Elliott serving as producer. The movie features the voice of Eric Bauza as the title character, alongside Timothy Omundson, Thaila Ayala, and Graham Verchere.

Produced by Universal Pictures, Universal 1440 Entertainment, and Universal Animation Studios, the film had a budget of 10 million USD and earned 15 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is mixed, with a rating of 4.2/10 on IMDb based on 6,100 votes and a higher score of 6.6/10 on TMDB from 778 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • For the first time in two decades, the image of the main character was based on one created in the 1950s. The last time viewers saw him was in the 1972 short film Bye, Bye, Blackboard, but he continued to be considered Woody's official image. It was abandoned in 1997, but returned to in this project.
  • The film was shot in British Columbia in English, but it was primarily made with the Brazilian film market in mind. In Latin America, Woody remains a popular character to this day, and a cartoon about him is currently airing on television.
  • Timothy Omundson plays Lance Walters. This name is a play on the name of the character's creator, Walter Lantz (1899-1994).
