Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is a Czechoslovak fantasy drama from 1970. It centres on Valerie, a thirteen-year-old girl living with her grandmother in a nineteenth-century town, who is on the verge of adulthood. When a pair of magic earrings comes into her possession, the world around her shifts: the ordinary town becomes a place where dreams, nightmares and waking life blend together. Valerie meets a lecherous priest named Gracián, a vampire-like stranger called Orlík, and a troupe of carnival performers, and she must work out what is real as her own sensuality stirs.
The film was directed by Jaromil Jireš, who wrote the screenplay with Ester Krumbachová. Jaroslava Schallerová plays Valerie, with Helena Anýžová, Petr Kopřiva, Jiří Prýmek, Jan Klusák and Libuše Komancová among a credited cast of forty. Running seventy-three minutes, it was shot in Czechoslovakia by Filmové studio Barrandov. In Jireš's filmography it stands as the first of the two titles listed, preceding Double Role (1999).
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around thirteen thousand votes, and on TMDB it also scores 7 out of 10, from 324 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from twenty-one reviews places it somewhat above both audience scores, suggesting the film has been held in steady regard by reviewers relative to its general viewers.
