Paul Winkelmann runs a furniture company in Hamburg, having taken it over after his father died eight years earlier. At 56 he remains firmly under the thumb of his 78-year-old mother, who still looks after him as though he were a small child and resents his move into a place of his own. His life changes when he meets Margarethe Tietze, a psychologist whose own relationship with her parents is far from simple. The bond between the two of them unsettles his mother, and matters come to a head when Paul invites Margarethe along on a business trip to Italy and later brings the families together around the coffee table, where the conversation does not go as planned.
Ödipussi is a 1988 West German comedy written and directed by Vicco von Bülow, better known as the comedian Loriot. It was his first feature film as a director, following a long career in television and comedy sketches, and he also stars as Paul, while Evelyn Hamann, a frequent partner in his television work, plays Margarethe. Katharina Brauren appears as Paul's mother, with Edda Seippel, Richard Lauffen and Klaus Schultz in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 27.
Released in March 1988 and running 88 minutes, the film has held up well with viewers: it scores 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 4,600 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from a little over 120.
