Candy is a young woman whose education continues outside the classroom. Curious and willing to give herself to nearly everyone she meets, she drifts through a series of encounters with eccentric men, each of whom wants something from her. Among them are a celebrated but self-absorbed poet, a surgeon, a military officer, a filmmaker and a self-styled guru. Her openness sets off confusion and upheaval around her, first in her hometown and later in New York, as the people she meets are drawn into her orbit with consequences that range from comic to disastrous.
The 1968 film was directed by Christian Marquand from a screenplay by Buck Henry, and it was produced by Robert Haggiag for Dear Film and Corona Cinematografica as an Italian, American and French co-production. Ewa Aulin plays Candy, heading a credited cast of thirty-four that includes Charles Aznavour, Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, James Coburn and John Huston. Running 124 minutes, it blends adventure, comedy and fantasy.
Made for about 3 million dollars, the film took roughly 16 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audience response has been modest: it holds a rating of 5.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 4,100 votes and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller vote count. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from eleven reviews sits in line with those audience figures.
