The kidnapping of Princess Yasmin of the kingdom of Lugash sets the plot in motion. A band of terrorists demands that the king step down and pay a large ransom. Commissioner Charles Dreyfus takes charge of the investigation and is given a local gendarme, Jacques Gambrelli, as his assistant. Dreyfus gradually notices that the young man's clumsiness feels strangely familiar, because Jacques is the son of the late Inspector Clouseau. Jacques's mother, Maria, once figured in Clouseau's own cases.
Blake Edwards directed the film, the twenty-sixth of the twenty-seven features he directed in chronological order, following Switch and preceding Victor/Victoria. Madeline Sunshine and Steven Sunshine wrote the screenplay, and Tony Adams and Michael Wells produced. Roberto Benigni plays Jacques, with Herbert Lom returning as Dreyfus and Claudia Cardinale as Maria. Shabana Azmi, Debrah Farentino and Jennifer Edwards appear as the Queen, Princess Yasmin and Yussa. The production, mounted by United Artists, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, International Traders and Filmauro, cost about 25 million dollars and returned roughly 2 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 3.9/10 from around 6,500 votes, and on TMDB 4.6/10 from 254 votes.
