The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give centers on Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old who moves between two sharply divided parts of her life: the predominantly Black neighborhood where she lives with her family, and the affluent, mostly white prep school she attends. That balance collapses when she witnesses a white police officer shoot and kill her unarmed childhood friend during a traffic stop. Pressured from several directions as the case draws public attention, Starr has to decide whether to stay silent or speak about what she saw.

George Tillman Jr. directed the film, working from a screenplay by Audrey Wells, with Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen and Robert Teitel producing. It was Tillman's fifth feature, arriving between The Longest Ride and Big George Foreman. Amandla Stenberg plays Starr, and the cast includes Regina Hall and Russell Hornsby as her parents, K.J. Apa, Common and Anthony Mackie, among 35 credited performers and a crew of 162.

Released in October 2018, the film runs 133 minutes and was made for about 23 million dollars, earning roughly 35 million worldwide. Audiences rate it 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb across 43,000 votes and 8.1 out of 10 on TMDB, while a critics' rating of 8.2 out of 10 from 225 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
