Oxygen
Short description
Elizabeth Hansen wakes inside a cryogenic medical capsule with no memory of who she is or how she ended up sealed in a space barely larger than a coffin. As her oxygen runs low, she must piece together her identity and work out how to escape, with only the capsule's artificial intelligence, MILO, to assist her. MILO, however, refuses some commands without a password, leaving Liz to find another way out before the air is gone.
Alexandre Aja directed the film, which he made after Crawl and before Never Let Go, from a screenplay by Christie LeBlanc. Mélanie Laurent plays Liz, with Mathieu Amalric as the voice of MILO and Malik Zidi, Laura Boujenah, Éric Herson-Macarel and Anie Balestra in supporting roles. It is a French and American production running 100 minutes.
Released in 2021, the film drew a critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 106 reviews, while audiences rated it 6.5/10 on IMDb from around 48,000 votes and 6.6/10 on TMDB from roughly 1,600 votes, an unusually narrow gap between critical and audience responses.
What's left behind the scenes
- Anne Hathaway was originally slated to play the lead role. After she dropped out of the project, Noomi Rapace was cast in her place. However, the role ultimately went to Mélanie Laurent when Alexandre Aja agreed to direct the film.
- Wolf 1061c, mentioned in the film, is a real planet that was discovered in 2015.
