Van Gogh

Set in 1890, this French drama follows Vincent van Gogh after he leaves an asylum and settles in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, where he lodges near Doctor Gachet, a friend and admirer of his painting. Van Gogh works intensively, trying to capture the movement of nature and the character of the people around him. He grows close to Gachet's daughter Marguerite, and drifts between visits to his brother Théo and encounters with a young woman named Cathy. Troubled by the burden he places on his brother, by the art market's indifference to his work, and by the fear of another collapse, he faces a decisive choice.

Maurice Pialat directed and wrote the film, the third of his three features listed here, following Byzance and Loulou. Jacques Dutronc plays Van Gogh, with Alexandra London as Marguerite, Bernard Le Coq as Théo, Gérard Séty as Gachet, and Elsa Zylberstein as Cathy. The production ran 158 minutes. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 3,600 votes, and on TMDB 6.7/10 from roughly 126 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.2/10 from 13 reviews.
