Mexico, 1985. Juan and Benjamín, two veterinary students drifting without direction, decide to break into the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City and steal a collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts. The museum is thinly guarded over the Christmas holidays, and the pair succeed in taking some of the country's most valuable pieces. Only afterwards, when the news coverage treats the theft as an assault on the nation itself, do they grasp the seriousness of what they have done. Their attempts to sell objects too famous for any buyer lead them across Mexico, from the ruins of Palenque to the beaches of Acapulco. The film is based on a true story; the characters are fictionalized versions of the young men responsible.
Alonso Ruizpalacios directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Manuel Alcalá. It is the second of the four features he has directed, following Café Paraíso and preceding Andor and La Cocina. Gael García Bernal plays Juan Núñez and Leonardo Ortizgris plays Benjamín Wilson, with Alfredo Castro, Bernardo Velasco, Leticia Brédice and Ilse Salas in supporting roles. The production involved companies in Canada, Mexico and South Africa, and runs 126 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 6,500 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from 155 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from 60 reviews places it above both audience scores.
