Short description

Set in early 19th century Paris during the reign of Napoleon, this crime drama follows François Vidocq, a former convict and master of escape. While attempting to hide his criminal history by living as a merchant, Vidocq is accused of a murder he did not commit. To secure his freedom, he strikes a deal with the police chief to use his insider knowledge of the underworld to hunt other criminals. This transition from fugitive to law enforcement officer earns him professional success but makes him a target for both the Parisian underworld and his own colleagues.

The film was directed by Jean-François Richet, marking his sixth feature film after titles such as Blood Father and One Wild Moment. The production is a collaboration between France and Belgium, featuring a cast led by Vincent Cassel, Patrick Chesnais, August Diehl, Olga Kurylenko, Denis Lavant, and Freya Mavor.

Audiences have given the movie a consistent reception, with a rating of 6.3/10 on IMDb from 6,800 votes and a matching 6.3/10 on TMDB from 536 votes. Film critics provided a slightly higher score of 6.4/10 based on 10 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jean-François Richet and Vincent Cassel, together with the choreographers, had to invent a new form of martial art for the film.
  • The original title of the film translates to “The Emperor of Paris.”
  • Filming took place at an old air force base near Bretigny-sur-Orge and Plessis-Pâté in the Essonne department, as well as at the estates of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Fontainebleau.
  • While working on the film, Jean-François Richet drew inspiration from the universe and characters of the novels by Alexandre Dumas père (1802-1870), as well as from popular literature of the early 20th century.
