Proxima

Proxima follows Sarah Loreau, a French astronaut and single mother training at the European Space Agency in Cologne, where she is the only woman in a demanding program. She lives with her seven-year-old daughter, Stella, and feels torn between the intense preparations for a year-long space mission and the time she can give her child. When Sarah is selected for the mission, named Proxima, her relationship with Stella is thrown into turmoil.

The film is directed by Alice Winocour, her third feature after Augustine (2012) and Disorder (2015), from a screenplay she wrote with Jean-Stéphane Bron. Eva Green stars as Sarah, with Matt Dillon as her fellow crew member Mike Shannon, Zélie Boulant-Lemesle as Stella, Lars Eidinger as Sarah's former partner Thomas, and Sandra Hüller as psychologist Wendy Hauer. It is a German-French co-production made for a budget of about 7 million dollars.

Released in late 2019, Proxima drew a critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 118 reviews, while audiences were more reserved: on IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 9,800 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from some 455 votes. Winocour went on to direct Revoir Paris in 2022 and Couture in 2026.
