The White Buffalo

Wild Bill Hickok, a celebrated gunfighter of the Old West, is haunted by dreams in which he faces a massive white buffalo. Hearing that such a beast is roaming the Black Hills, he sets out to hunt it, travelling under a false name but finding himself recognized wherever he goes. The animal has already left destruction behind it, including the death of the daughter of the Sioux leader Crazy Horse. Though the two men come to the hunt for different reasons, their paths cross, and eventually the gunfighter and the Sioux warrior join forces against the creature.

The White Buffalo was directed by J. Lee Thompson, the twelfth of the twenty-one films he directed in chronological order, following Battle for the Planet of the Apes and preceding Caboblanco. Richard Sale wrote the screenplay, and Pancho Kohner produced for United Artists and the Dino De Laurentiis Company. Charles Bronson plays Hickok, also called James Otis, with Jack Warden as Charlie Zane, Will Sampson as Crazy Horse, Kim Novak as Poker Jenny Schermerhorn, Clint Walker and Stuart Whitman. Around thirty credited cast and crew members worked on the ninety-seven-minute release.

Audience responses to the film are moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from about 6,100 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from roughly 150 votes. A smaller group of critics gave it 5.1 out of 10 from six reviews, a weaker figure than the audience scores.
