Short description

Margaret is an English teacher living in Tokyo, trying to put distance between herself and a painful past. By day she works at a training institute for flight attendants; at night she moves through the city's bars and love hotels, using drink, drugs and casual encounters to keep her memories of Canada and her troubled brother at bay. Her routine shifts when she becomes involved with Kazu, a Yakuza she meets in the city's nightlife, and the affair pulls her further into a world she cannot easily control.

The film is directed by William Olsson from a screenplay by Catherine Hanrahan, and it was released in September 2020. Alexandra Daddario plays Margaret, with Takehiro Hira as Kazu, Carice van Houten as Ines, Mariko Tsutsui as Mari and Anastasia Nasu as Irina among a credited cast of twenty-three. It runs ninety-seven minutes and was made as a co-production between the United States, Sweden and Japan.

Audience response on TMDB is modest, with a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from just over two hundred votes, and the film critics' rating stands at 5.5 out of 10 from twenty-four reviews, so critics and audiences landed in broadly similar territory.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The original version of the film (filmed in 2017 but not released until September 2020) was longer and darker, featuring more scenes in love hotels, as well as explicit eroticism and nudity. The film was cut slightly before its theatrical release in the hope that it would attract a wider audience. The original version was approximately 45 minutes longer than the final cut. Neither a director's cut nor an unrated version was released.
  • In December 2009, it was announced that Kate Bosworth would produce the film and star in the lead role, with Jean-Marc Vallée directing and Nadia Conners writing the screenplay. However, the project never progressed beyond the planning stage.
