Ovosodo follows Piero Mansani from his childhood through to his years as a father, growing up in a working-class neighbourhood of Livorno. His early life is unsettled, and there is the question of whether he will follow in the footsteps of his father, an unsuccessful small-time swindler who eventually disappears. As Piero gets older, other interests take hold, including girls, though he is not yet sure what he wants from them. A series of funny episodes, missteps and mistakes gradually shapes him as he comes of age.
The film is a comedy drama directed by Paolo Virzì, who wrote the screenplay with Furio Scarpelli and Francesco Bruni. It was produced by Vittorio Cecchi Gori and Rita Rusić for Cecchi Gori Group Tiger Cinematografica, and runs 100 minutes. Edoardo Gabbriellini plays Piero, with Claudia Pandolfi as Susy Susini, Nicoletta Braschi as Giovanna Fornari, Regina Orioli as Lisa, Malcolm Lunghi as the thirteen-year-old Piero and Alessio Fantozzi as Ivanone Mansani. It was released in September 1997.
Ovosodo came one year after August Vacation in Virzì's directing career, which later includes The First Beautiful Thing, Human Capital, Like Crazy, The Leisure Seeker, Another Summer Holiday and Five Seconds. Set in the director's own home city, it draws on the milieu of Livorno. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 486 votes, indicating a generally favourable response from viewers.
