Pierre is a seventeen-year-old who has led a sheltered life with his grandmother. He joins his parents at their home in the Canary Islands, where his father soon dies and his mother, Hélène, draws him into her nocturnal world. Hélène is a luxury prostitute whose life is given over to pleasure without regard for moral limits, and she gradually initiates her son into the same excesses rather than hiding her nature from him. She shares her lover Réa with Pierre, and the three become entangled in an arrangement that mixes ecstasy with shame. Christophe Honoré wrote and directed the film, adapting the novel by Georges Bataille, and it stands as the first feature in his filmography, followed by In Paris, Love Songs and later works. Isabelle Huppert plays Hélène, with Louis Garrel as Pierre, Joana Preiss as Réa, Emma de Caunes and Dominique Reymond in supporting roles. The film had a limited critical and popular reception, shown by a critics' rating of 4.3/10 on 42 reviews, alongside an IMDb rating of 4.9/10 from around 8,300 votes and a TMDB rating of 4.5/10 from a much smaller number of votes.
