Career Girls follows two women in their early thirties who meet again in London after several years apart. Hannah is loud and sharp-tongued, Annie quieter and more self-conscious. Their reunion prompts them to look back at the mid-1980s, when they were students sharing a flat and struggling to find their footing. Over the course of a weekend, encounters with people from that period bring back memories of that time and cast light on how both women have changed.
Mike Leigh wrote and directed the film, which followed Secrets & Lies (1996) in his filmography and was produced by Simon Channing Williams. Katrin Cartlidge plays Hannah and Lynda Steadman plays Annie, with Kate Byers, Mark Benton, Andy Serkis and Joe Tucker in supporting roles. The film runs 87 minutes and was made in the United Kingdom and France by Film4 Productions, Channel Four Films, Thin Man Films and Matrix Films.
Released in 1997, Career Girls took about 2 million dollars worldwide. It holds a 7.1 rating on IMDb from roughly 6,700 votes and a 6.6 on TMDB from a much smaller sample of 96. A critics' rating of 7.3 from 24 reviews places it slightly above the audience average on IMDb.
