Warriors of Virtue

Ryan Jeffers is a boy with a leg problem whose dream of joining his school's football team sets him apart from other children. Through his friend Ming, a Chinese restaurant chef skilled in both cooking and kung fu, he receives an old manuscript meant to help him find strength within himself. The book turns out to be far more than it appears, pulling Ryan into Tao, a mythical realm where he is hunted by the evil Lord Komodo, who wants to use the boy as a way of entering the real world.

Warriors of Virtue was directed by Ronny Yu and released in 1997. It followed The Bride with White Hair and preceded Bride of Chucky in the director's filmography. The screenplay is credited to Michael Vickerman, Hugh Kelley and Li Lianyi, with Angus Macfadyen as Komodo, Mario Yedidia as Ryan Jeffers, Marley Shelton as Elysia and Doug Jones as Yee heading a cast of 34 credited performers.

The film had a budget of 35 million US dollars and returned about 7 million worldwide. It holds a rating of 4.8 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 3,900 votes and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes, while a critics' rating stands at 4.7 out of 10 from 11 reviews, placing the two audiences and the critics close together.
